New Prints for Delayed Gratification

New Linocut prints for the next issue for Delayed Gratification on the face off between the Mexican drug cartel Los Zetas and activist internet group Anonymous. When Los Zetas kidnapped a member of Anonymous for inciting protests over corruption in Mexico this year, the Anonymous group went after the drug cartel vowing to reveal the identities of group members in public office. However, after the threat was made, Los Zetas made a threat of their own saying for every identity revealed 10 innocent people would die. The stand off was unlike anything seen before and ended in both side relenting without any interference from government or police. Extremely interesting article to illustrate and I'm pretty happy with the final results. Cant wait to read the rest of the next issue of DG for sure!

New Linocut for Strike! Magazine

A couple of versions of a new commission for Strike! magazine's article Balcombe Protest by Ewa El. The first illustration will be used in their upcoming Autumn issue. This piece illustrates the call for people to stand up to the big banks, corrupt police, monarchy and faceless politicians.

Final Illustrations for Lost in London

Here are the final images for 'The Phantom' article in the next issue of Lost in London. A really interesting article about the return of Goshawks to urban environment and how the regal Goshawk should be encouraged back in England as well. Really happy with how these have come out in the end. It was a really fun project to work on and great article, wish I had more time on it really. Might do my own series of endangered wildlife now just for a bit of light linocuting.

Strike! magazine illustration

I've been fortunate enough to illustrate Strike! magazine next front cover. Here are the 4 colour options I've been working on, not sure which I like best so I thought I would put them all up for you to peruse. This linocut again looks at co-operative housing, The People's Assembly and Climate Rush (who have articles in the next issue), images all coming from a central point of unity in the holding hands and a sneaky cnd logo too.

Structo Magazine illustration

Here is the final version for Structo, really enjoyed working on this one and very pleased with the result as well. Linocut to go with a very poetic short story called 'The Incidental' in Structos next issue on the addiction of collecting books.

STIR magazine illustration

O Solitude!

Third in the series of John Keats poems I have illustrated, this two plate linocut is to go alongside 'O Solitude!' :

O SOLITUDE! If I must with thee dwell,
Let it not be among the jumbled heap
Of murky buildings; - climb with me the steep,
Nature's Observatory - whence the dell,
Its flowery slopes - its rivers crystal swell,
May seem a span: let me thy vigils keep
'Mongst boughs pavilioned; where the Deer's swift leap
Startles the wild Bee from the Fox-glove bell.
Ah! fain would I frequent such scenes with thee;
But the sweet converse of an innocent mind,
Whose words are images of thoughts refin'd,
Is my soul's pleasure; and it sure must be
Almost the highest bliss of human kind,
When to thy haunts two kindred spirits flee.

Quint Magazine

Finals for Quint Magazine's next issue, both illustrations are made to show next to Dorian "Paul D" Rogers poems, the circular illustration next to 'The Phenomenology of Roundness' and the teardrop shaped one next to 'Make me Cry'. They are both inspired by the visual content of each poem and here they are:

The Phenomenology of Roundness
by Dorian "Paul D" Rogers

Life is most definitely round.
I stopped chasing my future when I found it in my back
pocket after taking my clothes out of the wash the other day.
It was hidden in the lint and blue jean matter.
I no longer get teary-eyed when my past pants
in my ears like a loose hyena.

I reminisce my grandfather's laughs in the present
tense although his tombstone where he lies lies
and says he is long gone.

Time is cyclical, and Westerners are dying earlier
from the depressing effects of believing it is linear.
Certain African tribes call it zamani, the "now-ness of time".
I call it the roundness of time
because that just sounds cooler.

I will name my first daughter Zamani although my wife
will call it "ghetto" and swear that I will be cursing her
to a life of unemployment. I will tell her to get "o-ver" it
and laugh at my own inside joke.

Our universe is but one sud in a soda can.
Nipples aren't erogenous zones but baby bulls' eyes.
When someone calls you zero or rates you as such,
take solace in the fact that they compared you to something round.

Nothing squarish is cool except some board games.
Octagons mean to halt. Triangles force you to be cautious.
Rectangles sound like accidents and getting caught in snares.
Circles claim the sun, earth, cells, and wombs as their shape-bearers.
Eggs are this shape and so are buttons that fasten and unhinge.

Want to have an equitable meeting?
Set chairs in a circle.
Get around to it.
Want to tell someone you understand? Tell them, "Oh".
Look in the mirror and say it to see what shape your lips make.
Form your mouth in a round fashion to give the ultimate satisfaction to your man.

Men get slapped by their spouses for getting distracted from roundness.
Ditch the stop lights and take the round-a-bout.
Look around you and all you will see is round.

Make Me Cry
By Dorian "Paul D" Rogers

Say something saffron and crushed velvet that will crush me.
It's been so long since I leaked from the cracked clay of cheekbone.
I've become hardened and coarse,
barren barely recognizable.
Nothing moves me anymore.

Sing me a novella through ghostlike windpipe. Vibrato me to weeping.
Tell me a poem that will make the demons inside me snap
their fingers and leave me in shame and repentance.
May the Lord forgive them and solder angels' wings to their spiked spines.

Give me an image that makes me remember why I'm here tonight.
Wake me out of this fool's gold doldrums where cubic zirconium stars
dangle from thin strings and tumble on to dull drums.
When that first tear falls,
don't be tempted to wipe it.
Let it trickle down and
do a rain dance like the indigenous
so that more will be summoned

Some will drip from my chin.
Others will run down my neck
under my shirt
down my chest
leg
toes
and form a puddle in the web between them.

Let the dust there
become fertile mud
where a seed can be planted
and a new life can begin.
But first you have to bring me back
to humanity, un-Frankenstein me
and make me cry.

Disassembled Prints

I've been working on a couple illustrations for Quint magazine (see finals above), I quite liked the prints on there own before putting them together.

Boneshaker Magazine Endpage Illustration

A few of my final linocut prints for Boneshaker Magazine. One of these images is going to span the next issues end pages. With this image I wanted to create an abstract design based on collapsed bike parts. I've been looking at a lot of the constructivist paintings of Aleksandr Rodchenko and Liubov Popova for this piece.
Stockists of the Boneshaker mag can be found here.

Delayed Gratification 'Making Waves'

My second linocut for Delayed Gratification Magazine, featured in the upcoming issue.  Illustration to go along with a report by James Montague about Oman and a how Moosa al Farei has set up a Radio station called Al Wisal in Seeb, a costal town near Oman's capital Muscat. His show has supported and empowered the people of Oman by allowing them an public outlet to voice concerns and problems with public services and government issues.

Ode on Melancholy linocuts

My two colour plate linocut prints for my illustration of John Keats 'Ode on Melancholy'. Not sure which version I like better. Working on my third in the series of Keats poems at the moment, updates soon.
